With summer slipping away, we want to squeeze in one last logistically-light getaway. Cue the new Conestoga Ranch, a glamping resort on the shores of beautiful Bear Lake. Only a hop-skip three hours away, Conestoga is both close AND high concept. The brainchild of our friend Tom Hedges and his Jackson-based Cabin & Company, Conestoga offers custom covered wagons and wall tents on an 18-acre property overlooking the turquoise waters of Bear Lake (dubbed the “Caribbean of the Rockies”). Old West by design, the aesthetic is rustic luxury a la Ralph Lauren: the wagons are big enough for a king bed sheathed in chic woolens and family-sized Grand Tents include ensuite bathrooms (a hot shower while camping?!). Families and groups are welcome guests, with bunk beds in some tents and the hillside property to roam. Campfire rings and Adirondack chairs encourage stargazing and smoresing, and the wagons are parked in a ring for socializing.
Truly a resort, Conestoga bucks the notion of bland camp food with its Campfire Grill plating wood-burning oven pizzas, steaks and salads and pouring wine and craft beers (breakfasts are added on weekends). The Shake Shack mixes raspberry milkshakes – the signature treat of Bear Lake. And the General Store stocks necessities like Kobe beef hot dogs. The Main Lodge hosts live bands on Friday nights, and Saturdays (through Labor Day) see the Bear Lake Rodeo – a chance for guests to cowboy up. Having just opened in July, Conestoga will close for the winter on September 30, though interest may compel the owners to stay open longer. And JH friends, be sure to check out the special deal designed with you in mind.
