Barn Raising a Bakery

Technically, Persephone Bakery is only five days old. But to those of us involved in its creation, it feels far more familiar. What began as a broad vision – bracketed by my husband’s passion for bread and my passion for design – came to life thanks to the work and wisdom of several talented artists in town. The endlessly creative Nona Yehia and Abby Filanowski of E/Ye Design transformed the space with professional grace and enormous patience. The witty and wonderful Christian Burch and John Frechette found the vintage and industrial pieces that give the café personality, and also introduced me to the artisan who made all of the bistro tables. Our talented team of bakers Katie Davis and Hannah Dodds experimented with sugar and flour in countless iterations; their successes now stand atop cake stands in the café. And, last but not least, our stunningly supportive family and friends carried us through barn-raising a business. It truly takes a village…
