Clean Slate

The recent turn in weather readies us for transitions – back to school, into fall. To embrace change, I try and create a clean slate of my surroundings, most immediately, my home. A new-to-us line of household products makes cleaning the home slate all the more enticing: Murchison-Hume, a natural brand hailing from Sydney and Los Angeles.

The Katers created Murchison-Hume as concerned parents after their youngest son developed allergies to common household cleaners. Unable to find natural, safe, effective alternatives, they decided to develop their own, tapping both of their backgrounds – Peter was an engineer and Max was a fashion editor, hence the immaculate aesthetic. They named the company after Peter’s dad, a doctor who embodies “just the right mix of style and old-school gravitas,” the Katers write on their website, not to mention the company’s core values: practical, elegant, diligent, eco-friendly. We can aspire to that.

For our first shipment of Murchison-Hume, we chose a selection for the home chef. b80b6c4934395b9f52ca588878c516bbWe love that the product labels delineate each all-natural ingredient according to its function. The Heirloom dishwashing liquid lives up to its name in an unexpected way by cleaning not only your dishes, but also your plumbing pipes and your wastewater. The Australian white grapefruit scent is as subtle as it is delicious. The dish brush is made with natural plant fiber bristles and a rounded wooden handle, a design sturdy enough for serious scrubbing but soft enough to not scratch glassware. For those not thrilled with scents, we stocked the Cook’s Soap, a 100% natural, fragrance-free formula that won’t compete with the aroma of your recipes, and its “trusty sinkside companion,” the Kitchen Glove unscented hand cream. Our hope is that all of these products become your trusty sink-side sidekicks.
