The 2017 total solar eclipse will happen on Monday, August 21st. It will start in Jackson Hole at 10:17am and end at 12:56am. Totality will occur around 11:36, for 2 minutes and 15 seconds. To celebrate, we’ve developed our very own CookiEclipse for this once-in-four-century phenomenon.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the New Moon comes between the Sun and Earth and casts the darkest part of its shadow, the umbra, on Earth. The beautiful symmetry of a total solar eclipse happens because—by purechance—the sun is 400 times larger than the moon but is also 400 times farther from Earth, making the two bodies appear the exact same size in the sky. What this means is that the Sun and the Moon both have a very similar size when viewed from Earth, so when the Moon passes in front of the Sun, it blocks the light from reaching Earth.
